Mass shootings prompt college to drop mascot’s name: Shooter


POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) — Mass shootings throughout the nation have prompted Marist School in New York to drop Shooter because the nickname for its sports activities mascot.

The Poughkeepsie Journal studies that Marist School got here up with a brand new identify for the costumed mascot for its Pink Foxes males’s and ladies’s basketball groups after final month’s mass capturing at a rustic music live performance in Las Vegas.

The varsity’s athletics division settled on Frankie, a nod to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was born in close by Hyde Park.

The personal school in Poughkeepsie, north of New York Metropolis, debuted the brand new nickname throughout final weekend’s season openers for each groups.

The unique Shooter nickname was used for years and referred to capturing baskets, not weapons.
